Celebrate the Fourth of July

Published: Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 Celebrate the Fourth of July Don’t mess with tradition: Gardiner has one of the best Fourth of July picnics around.

The event started in 1992 and has been a tradition ever since. It’s usually held at noon on Front Street.

There are tons of other events throughout the day, for young and old alike.

Ever been to a snail race? Kids from around the region bring their favorite snails, plop them down in a chalk-drawn circle on the sidewalk and cheer them on.

There’s also a balloon toss, an egg toss and, as the kids in the photo demonstrate, a watermeloneating contest that’s sure to bring lots of smiles.

For info: Dixie Hash, (541) 271-4005. Looking for fireworks? Other nearby towns, including Winchester Bay and Lakeside, put on fireworks displays. Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce, (800) 247-2155 or (541) 271-3495; http://www.reedsportcc.org; Lakeside Chamber of Commerce, (541) 759-3981
