Heart of the Dunes 2009

An ocean gateway

Published: Thursday, June 4th, 2009 Winchester Bay is home to Salmon Harbor, a safe haven for fishing and recreational boats, in addition to sailboats. The U.S. Coast Guard maintains a station here.

Winchester Bay is a gateway to fishing in the Pacific Ocean and within moments of uncrowded, spectacular beaches. It also sits snug in the middle of the Oregon Dunes Recreation Area. This is the home of DuneFest, which brings in thousands of people each summer for sand racing competition and fun.

For the less action-oriented, a quick trip up the hill will take visitors to the Umpqua River Lighthouse and a museum next door. There are plenty of choices when it comes to staying to play, with RV parks, campgrounds and the sparkling Lake Marie.
