Published: Thursday, June 4th, 2009 Scottsburg, Elkton and Loon Lake, areas surrounded by water, whether in the form of rivers or lakes, get a respite from the cool summer breezes that hit the ocean shoreline in the summertime.Temperatures are usually a few degrees higher ” sometimes several degrees higher ” and the sun usually shines most of the day. The weather makes these areas perfect getaways for fishing, hiking or just taking it easy.One of Scottsburg's claims to fame is its Founder's Day celebration in February. Loon Lake has a lodge and several camping areas with boating facilities available.Elkton is in the process of rebuilding a replica of Fort Umpqua.Loon Lake is a short 8 miles off of state Highway 38 heading east out of Reedsport; the highway goes right through Scottsburg and Elkton.Elkton, a tiny timber town, was incorporated in 1948.On the banks of the Umpqua River, the community is popular with fishermen hoping to hook small-mouthed bass and salmon. There are about 200 residents in Elkton, but in the summer the population swells with visitors who enjoy nearby camping and recreation.
