Lakeside has a rich ” really rich ” pastPublished: Thursday, June 4th, 2009 In Lakeside, just follow main street (actually Eighth Street) to the end of the road and you'll find yourself on the shores of Tenmile Lakes. The lakes are famous for bass fishing and the drag boat races that are held each September.Back in the 1930s, Lakeside was an up-scale Hollywood get-away for movie stars. Millionaire movie producer Roy Currier and his partner, George Mitchell, stumbled on the scenic spot and made it their own, buying up 160 acres of lake frontage for the princely sum of $5,000. Before long, steam-heated cabins and a fancy restaurant were perched on the shores and California's elite were dropping $250 per week to vacation there during the height of the Depression. Entertainment was first rate, with stars like Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and the Ink Spots headlining in the lounge. When World War II erupted, the resort dried up and was eventually completely abandoned by the rich and famous. Memorabilia is still on display at Lakeshore Lodge, which now stands where the original restaurant, with a hoity-toity English chef, once served up delicacies. Now the lodge features a rustic lounge, lakefront dining and a motel that overlooks the lake. Next to the lodge, Lakeside Marina is the place to visit if you want to get out on the lake. Rent a waverunner for a quick skim across the lake or spend the day in a bass boat, reeling them in. If you've got a little time to spend here, a party boat is a wonderful way to spend the day with a few friends. Thinking about a vacation home at the beach? Drop by Osprey Point RV Resort and take a look at the mobile vacation homes for sale. They look like little cabins, but register as an RV. It's the newest rage for affordable get-aways.
