Months before the trucks loaded with chain saw carvers and their gear arrive in town, organizers are busy preparing for the Oregon Divisional chain saw Sculpting Championships in Reedsport. This year’s event is scheduled for Father’s Day weekend, June 12-15, and will be held at Rainbow Plaza, near the Umpqua Discovery Center in Old Town Reedsport. The theme is “Fish Tales,” and matches the country’s best sculptors saw for saw in a contest to cut massive Sitka spruce logs into works of art. Volunteers organize quick-carve competitions, in addition to coordinating judging and other activities. There also are chain saw art auctions and visitors get to vote for the People’s Choice Award. Entertainment is on the schedule, too. There will be music on Friday night along with other events throughout the weekend. The event is one of a series of events that qualifies for the Echo Carving Series 2008 Cup. Local competitors compete with carvers from places as far away as Illinois and Colorado, even Japan and Germany.
