Birders who choose to spend time scoping out the area in and around Winchester Bay, Reedsport and Gardiner will be richly rewarded. The forests, waterways and riparian areas, estuary and mudflats, sandy beaches and open ocean offer diverse habitats that host more than 240 bird species.Exceptional birding viewpoints can be found in the middle of town or a short walk in any direction. A walk along the Scholfield Creek dike or on the boardwalk along the Umpqua River in Old Town are ideal places to view herons and other waterfowl, as is Coho RV Park and Marina. For info: The Visitor Center has checklists in the lobby, including the gField Checklist of the Birds of Douglas County and the Bird Checklist for the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. The visitor center and the Umpqua Discovery Center both sell field guides. |
